The Gazette's Bill Brownstein featured filmmaker Michael Jarvis in a column. Jarvis, a graduate of the Cinema Department, is making a film about 17th-century navigator Mathieu Da Costa, one of the first free black men to come to North America and an invaluable aide to Samuel de Champlain. Jarvis, who is an 11th- generation Canadian, got the idea from his grandmother, who lives in Nova Scotia. He showed an 18-minute short on the subject at the Cinématheque Québécoise to raise money for a full-length feature.
